Legal Admissibility

Court-Admissible Signatures with Full Chain of Custody

Every Zignature signature meets the ESIGN Act's legal requirements and produces a Certificate of Completion documenting signer identity, IP address, timestamp, geolocation, and document hash. The certificate is cryptographically sealed — any post-signing alteration is immediately detectable in any court proceeding.

  • ESIGN Act & UETA compliant — federally recognized across all 50 states.
  • SHA-256 document hash — proves the signed version was never altered.
  • eIDAS Simple Electronic Signature — recognized across all EU member states.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know.

Are e-signatures legally binding for legal contracts?

Yes. Under the federal ESIGN Act and UETA, electronic signatures have the same legal force as handwritten signatures for the vast majority of legal documents including retainer agreements, NDAs, settlement agreements, fee disclosures, and most contracts. Documents requiring notarization or specific witnessing requirements are exceptions and must still follow those formalities.

Is the Zignature audit trail admissible in court?

Yes. The Zignature Certificate of Completion contains signer name, email, IP address, timestamp, geolocation, device information, and a SHA-256 hash of the signed document. This evidence trail satisfies the authentication requirements under Federal Rule of Evidence 901 and is accepted by courts across the United States.

Can I send multi-party documents like settlement agreements?

Yes. Zignature supports sequential and parallel multi-party signing. For settlement agreements involving plaintiff, defendant, and insurer, you can configure the signing order and each party receives the document only after the previous signer has completed their portion.

Does Zignature work with Clio, MyCase, or other legal practice management software?

Zignature connects to Clio, MyCase, PracticePanther, and other legal practice management tools via REST API and Zapier. You can automatically trigger document sends from matter stage changes and write signed status back to the matter record.

Can I use Zignature for court filing cover sheets and e-filing?

Zignature prepares documents for signing but is not itself a court e-filing service. You would sign the document in Zignature, then upload the signed PDF to your jurisdiction's e-filing system (PACER, Tyler Technologies EFM, etc.). The signed Zignature PDF is accepted by all major court e-filing platforms.

What's the difference between an e-signature and a notarized document?

An electronic signature is the signer's legally recognized consent to a document's terms. Notarization is a separate process involving a notary public who verifies the signer's identity. For documents requiring notarization, you need Remote Online Notarization (RON) in addition to an e-signature. Zignature integrates with RON providers for this workflow.

Does Zignature support qualified electronic signatures for international matters?

Yes. Through the eIDEasy integration, Zignature supports Qualified Electronic Signatures (QES) under eIDAS — the EU's highest legal standard for electronic signatures. QES are legally equivalent to handwritten signatures in all EU member states.

How does Zignature handle document confidentiality for attorney-client privilege?

All documents in Zignature are encrypted at rest (AES-256) and in transit (TLS 1.3). Role-based access controls ensure only authorized users in your firm can view each matter's documents. SOC 2 Type II certification documents our security controls for attorney-client privilege requirements.
