Are e-signatures legally valid in Canada?

Yes. Canada's Uniform Electronic Commerce Act (UECA) — adopted with variations by most provinces — and provincial Electronic Commerce Acts recognise electronic signatures as legally valid for most commercial documents. PIPEDA governs privacy aspects of e-signature processing.

Is e-signature law different in Quebec?

Yes. Quebec has its own legislation — the Act Respecting the Legal Framework for Information Technology (LCCJTI / RLRQ, c C-1.1). Quebec recognises electronic signatures but may require compliance with additional technology-specific requirements for certain document types.

Does Zignature comply with PIPEDA?

Yes. Zignature processes personal information in compliance with PIPEDA's 10 Fair Information Principles. A PIPEDA-compliant data processing agreement is available for Canadian customers.

Can Canadian employment contracts be signed electronically?

Yes. Electronic employment contracts are legally valid across Canadian provinces under the respective Electronic Commerce Acts. Employment Standards Act (ESA) minimum provisions apply regardless of signature method.

Are there Canadian documents that cannot be signed electronically?

Some documents are excluded: wills and powers of attorney for property (in most provinces), documents negotiable by endorsement, and certain regulated financial instruments. Commercial and employment contracts are fully e-signable.

Does Canada have GDPR-equivalent privacy law?

PIPEDA is Canada's federal privacy law — similar to GDPR in principle. Bill C-27 (Consumer Privacy Protection Act) is proposed to replace PIPEDA with stronger GDPR-aligned provisions. Quebec's Law 25 already introduces GDPR-level requirements for Quebec-based businesses.
